What is the difference?

A great example to explain the differences between a journeyman electrician and a master electrician would be a bachelor’s degree vs a master’s degree. While obtaining either degrees are great accomplishments and very beneficial, a master’s degree requires additional years of school. Just as a master electrician has completed more training and more experience than a journeyman electrician would have.

Journeyman electricians require approx. 8000 hours of on the job experience, directly supervised by a master electrician over a 4 year span. A master electrician must complete an additional 4000(approx. 2 years) of on the job work experience and complete an additional test to become a certified master electrician.

Why go the Extra Step Towards becoming a master electrician?

Master electricians have a higher level of education and training which provides more experience and skills in all areas of electrical installations, systems and codes, including safety regulations, project management, and overseeing the work of apprentices including journeyman electricians. Only can a master electricians can obtain proper permits for work or projects. Master electrician can own/run their own businesses and/or work for a contractor.

Who do you hire?

Both a journeyman electrician and master electrician have the appropriate qualifications to perform the work in your home or office, but should the job entail a more complex configuration or require electrical permits than you should expect the company you’ve hired to have a master electrician who will oversee the work.
